League rules stipulate that players may not play in League or Cup games in another League without Cricket Committee approval. After his solo appearance for Heywood, Rehman continued to play regularly for Nantwich throughout May and early June, becoming the leagues top wicket-taker with 32 victims. Consequently, Widnes have had 24 points deducted for their win against Alderley Edge on May 9th, four points for their defeat by Toft on May 16th; 20 for their defeat of Macclesfield on May 23rd; 25 for their defeat of Didsbury on May 30th; and five for their defeat by Bowdon on June 13th, total 78. They have had a further 10 points deducted according to rule for fielding an ineligible player in each of these five games, a further 50 points raising the total to 128. Also following league rules, Alderley Edge will have 19 points restored, Toft none; Macclesfield 17; Didsbury 18 and Bowdon three. Dismissed from Fred Graham Trophy Due to Rehman playing in Widnes second round Fred Graham T20 Trophy defeat of Chester Boughton Hall, Widnes have been dismissed from that competition and Chester reinstated, although they have already been eliminated in a third round tie at Oulton Park. As Widnes are not eligible to play in the competition, Upton receive a bye in the second round of the Plate. Widnes chairman Robin Faulkner says: We have exercised our right to appeal. We believe we have a strong case. No alterations will be made to the Premiership table until the result of the appeal is announced. A month ago, Alderley Edge had 35 points deducted and Overseas player Sohail Rauf suspended for the remainder of the season for appearing in the Staffordshire Cup for Burslem without authorisation. On appeal, Raufs ban was reduced to four weeks. Alistair Davies tests your Cricket Law: Week 11 THERE is an injured striker and a runner on the field of play. The other batsman is on strike standing behind the popping crease, and the injured striker is standing at square leg in front of the popping crease. The wicket-keeper sees the situation and breaks the wicket fairly and appeals. What should be the umpires decision? Reminder of last weeks poser: One of the batsmen gives the umpire at the strikers end his sweater to hold. As the bowler delivers the ball, the sweater falls to the ground. The striker hits the ball towards square leg and the ball becomes entangled in the sweater. The batsmen have set off for a run. What would you expect to happen next? ANSWER: The ball is dead when it becomes lodged in what has become, part of the umpires clothing. However, an umpire may feel it is appropriate to call and signal dead ball. The batsman in this case had not crossed before the ball became dead, consequently the striker faces the next delivery. Law 23.1 a v . and Jon Hacking has a query JOVIAL League Umpires Appointments secretary Jon Hacking has a query. He writes: During the Hyde v Ormskirk National cup match recently the following incident occured: Rob Brierley of Hyde hits the ball high into the air towards long-off. The fieldsman runs back and takes up a position six feet outside the rope He jumps into the air, knocking the ball back into play. He was not in contact with the ground when he touched the ball. He returns to the field of play and throws the ball into the keeper. The batsmen have completed one run. As an umpire what should I have done? At the time I awarded six runs and sent the batsmen back to their original ends. This was supported by my colleague and both teams. Many senior umpires have since agreed with my action but some have not. The main reason for my decision was my belief that fielders cannot enter or leave the field without permission. For example, a fast bowler taking a breather and sitting on a bench at third man between overs is not allowed. I do not have Sky tv and am told this type of incident happened in the World T20 Cup when the umpires acted differently to myself. I am left wondering who is right? Its not like Jon to be indecisive! Any views? contact Jon direct at HYPERLINK "mailto:jhacking@gmail.com" jhacking@gmail.com or reply via Newsletter TOMMY COOPERISMS: Man takes his Rottweiller to the vet. My dogs cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him? Vet: Lets have a good look. He picks up the dog and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth and feet. Finally, he says: Im going to have to put him down. Man, crestfallen, What! Just because hes cross-eyed. Vet: No, hes bloody heavy.
