This time they were never seriously challenged. Chichester took the Division 2 title, bouncing back from relegation, whilst Keymer & Hassocks and Billingshurst were the respective champions of Division 3 (East) and (West). This year there was something of a resurgence in the influence imposed by players not qualified for England, although Mark Newell topped the Premier Division batting averages. It was Preston Nomads sixth Championship. They led the Table from the first week and clinched the title on 15 August. At that time they were unbeaten and whilst they subsequently lost twice to Horsham and Brighton & Hove - this in no way detracted from another fine all-round performance. Carl Simon, their Antiguan fast bowler took 67 wickets while Nick Hobbs with 39, Stephen Rigg (34), and Kashif Ibrahim (30) all added to an impressive attack. Of the batsmen, the top performers were Rob Wakeford, with 482 runs, Joe Gatting with 383, Michael Gould (364), and Jeremy Green (323). The wicketkeeper, James McKerney, shone once again with 39 dismissals. Nomads also won the Leagues T20 competition for the second successive year, going on to represent the League in the ECBs National competition. They also won the National Indoor Championship earlier in the year. The Premier Division runners-up (76 points behind Nomads) were East Grinstead, their highest position since joining the Premier Division in 2003. They won 11 matches, most of these by comprehensive margins and finished the season with a run of three victories in which they dismissed the opposition for under 100 and knocked off the runs in no time! Their leading bowlers were Cullen Bailey (from Australia) who took 33 wickets, Craig Fowle and Simon Williamson (both with 28). The batting was dominated by the South African, Gary Kleinveldt (722 runs) and Cullen Bailey (669). Alex Edwards, the skipper, scored 461. Brighton & Hove, who were without any form of overseas player, came third, having also won 11 matches. They owed a great deal to the skipper, Patrick Spencer who scored 576 runs and took 47 wickets with his leg breaks. His, often successful, appeals could frequently be heard over a considerable distance! Matthew Wood was the other main successful bowler, with 45 wickets. Matt Machan and Luke Wells, Brightons talented young batsmen, scored respectively 634 and 627 runs. Both of these players have been awarded County contracts for 2010. Outside the top three, only Cuckfield kept up any kind of sustained challenge, and they fell away badly towards the end of the season. A late run by Horsham took them to fourth position, whilst Hastings and Three Bridges spent the first half of the season flirting with relegation. They were saved from this fate by Haywards Heath and Lewes Priory who, having established themselves in the bottom two in week 2, never managed to escape and were both relegated after only one season at the higher level. Lewes have now managed to change their Divisional status in six of the past seven years! Chichester, the Division 2 champions, came back after relegation in 2008; they are another club to develop yo-yo tendencies, having swapped Divisions in four consecutive years. Bexhill were runners-up and so achieved Premier Division status for the first time since 2000. For Chichester their close-season acquisition the itinerant former 1st Class player Richard Logan played a telling role, with 303 runs and 56 wickets. He effectively carried the bowling. By contrast Chichesters batting was remarkably consistent. Five batsmen scored over 300 runs, with Chris Kirkham getting 490. Bexhill, with the help of two Australian-born players David Lowery and Shaun Austin who between them scored 1165 runs and took 58 wickets managed to hold off a strong challenge from Stirlands. At the bottom of Division 2 the big surprise was Littlehampton who, after being close contenders for promotion in 2007 and 2008, failed to win a match and were relegated, along with Middleton who went straight back into Division 3 (West). At 3rd Division level, the competition in the East was, in the end, won by Keymer & Hassocks who stormed ahead of their rivals Seaford, the leaders for most of the season, and Sidley, with a marvellous late run. Their strength lay in their bowling, with off-spinner Andy Westgate taking 60 wickets and Michael Poole, the 19-year-old seamer, 42. Division 3 (West) was won by Billingshurst, who looked likely winners for most of the season; they were challenged only by Bognor and in the end came top by 66 points. Their star performers were John Burroughs (808 runs) and overseas player, Carleon Brome from Barbados, with 46 wickets as well as 464 runs. 2009 saw the consolidation of the new expanded SCL, sitting at the top of the rapidly developing Sussex League pyramid of League cricket. At the end of 2010 the way will be opened to promotion for clubs at the top of the newly restructured West Sussex Invitation League and the East Sussex League. 2010 should prove exciting at all levels!
